Your dissertation guidelines might provide some instructions or recommendations on word count per chapter, but this is not always the case. Always leave extra words for your Results chapter. May 20, · Two of the least productive students in our group have written + page theses (70,+ words) yet don't have enough work in there to publish a single paper. Most science theses are about half that length (35, - 40,). The most impressive thesis I've seen was European (from Sweden I think) and extremely thin.
Word count is really unimportant. What is important is the content. This is kind of like Quora, where a long answer is not necessarily a good answer, nor a short one a bad one. That said, my own doctoral dissertation was about pages, and apparently decent enough to pass as I seem to have the degree.
