A Summer Llfe is no anger-laden attack on a hellhole of a birthplace. Anyone who has spent time, to say nothing of eighteen years of growing-up time, in the valley, has recollections of a place which defies yet welcomes human habitation. Most of the stories are presented by Soto as a young boy, usually between four to twelve years old with a rare few stretching through to seventeen and beyond; this is fine, but the novel is made an almost unbearably tiresome and tedious read due to the fact that next to none of the stories are placed in chronological order.
